A closed-off, dated kitchen becomes the open, hard-working heart of a historic Glen Ridge home. Here's how the project came together.
The starting point
The owners were avid cooks living with a kitchen that fought them at every turn — cramped counters, a layout cut off from the rest of the house, and finishes that had long since dated. They needed a space that could handle real, everyday cooking without stripping away the period character that drew them to the home in the first place.
It's a challenge we see often in Glen Ridge, where historic homes have wonderful bones but kitchens built for a different era.
The plan
We opened the floor plan to connect the kitchen with the surrounding living spaces, then designed custom cabinetry and a generous island to anchor the room. Every layout decision was validated in 3D renderings first, so the clients could see exactly how the new flow would feel before we committed to moving a single wall.
Material choices balanced two goals: durability for a kitchen that gets used hard, and period-appropriate detailing so the renovation felt original to the house rather than bolted on.
