The honest answer: it depends — but here's the range
The most common question we hear at a first consultation is also the hardest to answer in one sentence: what will this cost? Interior design isn't priced like a product on a shelf. It scales with the size of your space, the depth of the work, and how much you want handled for you.
That said, you deserve real numbers going in. Below is how designers in Montclair and the surrounding Essex County towns typically structure their fees, and the honest factors that move the total up or down.
The three fee models you'll encounter
Flat fee (fixed). You agree on one price for a defined scope — say, a full living room or a whole-home concept. Best when the project is well-defined, because you know the number up front with no surprises. This is how we prefer to work whenever the scope allows.
Hourly. You pay for the designer's time as the project moves. This fits smaller, open-ended work — a color consultation or a single tricky room — where a fixed scope is hard to pin down. Our design consultations are a good example.
Cost-plus. The designer sources furnishings and materials at trade pricing and adds a set percentage. You get access to pieces and vendors you couldn't reach on your own, folded into a fully-managed project.
What actually drives the number
Scope is the biggest lever — a one-room refresh and a whole-home renovation live in completely different budgets. After that: the level of service (design-only versus full-service execution where we manage sourcing, vendors, and installation), the quality tier of furnishings you choose, and whether construction or custom millwork is involved.
